Mark Miller — review, ‘Late Harvest’ … haiku and senryu

A positive review of Mark Miller’s ‘Late Harvest’ appears in the October 2026 issue of ‘Chrysanthemum No 37’:

In the end, it matters little whether these are so-called nature poems, senryū, subjective-animisticpoems, or even, though none occur here, surreal, absurd, or symbolic poems. They all simply demonstrate the formal and expressive diversity of the genre. What matters is that the haiku-like miniatures arise from the author’s own immediate experience and therefore authentically express the movement of being in life, exactly as it is, from moment to moment.

Mark Miller demonstrates a keen eye and fine sensitivity, which he expresses both naturally and without strain. Definitely worth reading.

Review, published in both German and English, by Beate Conrad, ‘Chrysanthemum No. 37’, October 2026 (pg 256), freely downloadable.

Vale Hilary McPhee

Incredibly sad to learn that Hilary McPhee has died. ‘The Conversation‘ carries an article by Alicy Grundy.

Hilary McPhee, who has died, aged 85, was already a legend when I started working in publishing, nearly two decades ago.

McPhee Gribble, the publishing house she founded with friend Diana Gribble in 1975, was the first home for some of Australia’s beloved authors, including Helen Garner, Gabrielle Carey and Kathy Lette. It also published Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet, voted the nation’s best novel by the Australian Society of Authors in 2003 – the same year it topped a reader poll.
