{"id":403,"date":"2022-08-22T01:18:25","date_gmt":"2022-08-22T01:18:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/walleahpress.com.au\/currajah\/?p=403"},"modified":"2022-08-22T01:23:23","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T01:23:23","slug":"vale-david-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walleahpress.com.au\/currajah\/index.php\/2022\/08\/22\/vale-david-ireland\/","title":{"rendered":"Vale David Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saddened to learn of David Ireland&#8217;s death last month.<\/p>\n<p>He was awarded the Miles Franklin Award on three occasions, for his novels &#8216;The Unknown Industrial Prisoner&#8217; (1971), &#8216;The Glas<strong>s <\/strong>Canoe&#8217; (1976), and &#8216;For a Woman of the Future&#8217; (1979).<\/p>\n<p>Professor Van Ikin penned <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/farewell-to-david-ireland-three-times-miles-franklin-winner-and-master-of-mosaic-fiction-187938\">a farewell to Ireland at &#8216;The Conversation&#8217;,<\/a> including his recall of an early meeting with Ireland:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">As a young Sydney Uni postgrad in 1976, I met Ireland in his tiny Sydney writing pad and inadvertently opened a door to an empty low-lit room. The floor was carpeted with card-sized slips of paper, some of which fluttered up and relocated upon my entry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cSorry, not that door,\u201d said Ireland, and proceeded to explain that his novels evolved from scenes and images, each jotted onto a card. (The Unknown Industrial Prisoner is composed of 330 of these.)
