DEBORAH COXHEAD

ONE LONG NIGHT

Winter came
and silence ate the furious fireworks
that rocketed death to boys on their bellies
lying taut on the dark, green field –
or brown, dry earth
or dark, wooded jungle and
burning sand desert.
It all came at once
and reflected in the wide eyes –
mirrored light that opened
in one brief moment.
Closed.
Against the memory of those
who'd gone before in other places.
Was he there?
Deja vu filled the air
then left before he raised his lids
and found himself alone.

In the dark stillness it was cold.
Snow might fall –
like those nights in the country
when he was at school.

Only blood moved in the quietness with him
as he moved away.
