i wanted to throw your things out on the lawn
i've had enough of washed linen
you stick pegs in the cuffs of my nails
each time you play dangerous games
you fall flat on your face like me
& nobody wins
we eat each other up like watermelon
& toss out the pips
i'm hungry for the last slice of bread
we've watched the oceans come in
drank beer to swallow ourselves
in a ripple you leave
the emancipation still in your mouth
& mine
as i reach for the curtain
to tell the world
how dam lazy love is
& how it needs a kick in the arse
or one of those
gas-flying balloons to make its flowers bloom
i've cut the wire netting
& the birds fly out
a circle of friends you left behind
we squeeze love from a dry orange
you eat yours i eat mine
i daren't tell you it's safe to love me
you'll say you already do
but that's not the love i'm talking about
it hasn't arrived yet
it's down the paddock somewhere
waiting for a lift
you say give it one
i say you give it one
we say let it walk it's a nice day
i say it needs a couple like us
let's go get it
so we walk down the street holding hands
& suddenly it find us
some say we don't deserve it
there must be some mistake
it can't be them who are they trying to kid
so we roll over in our bed doubtful
& we look at each other & wonder
have we done the right thing
& love starts to feel insecure
so we tell it not to bother us
& it goes away feeling lost
we watch it go thinking
will it come back
has it had its day
we look at each other
like 2 strangled eggs
eating our meal
