Birdsong

In the night
a strange bird
straight out of poetry and old songs
alights on the electricity pole
and makes the doleful sound
of those who have been
wronged in love.
Partnerless
the bird in on the lookout
for its mate,
the gate shifts in the wind
and makes a sound
like groaning
but still the bird is lonely
on the pole.
Whole arias
move along the wind
and reach my window
tremulous and sad
I stay awake
and wish the bird
the kind of glad reunion
straight out of poetry and old songs.
