The Training of the Urban Guerrilla

after Marighela

Apart from technical preparation,

other useful forms of training are

hiking, camping and spending long periods in rough country,

mountain-climbing, swimming, canoeing,

deep-sea diving and fishing

(as practised by frogmen),

fishing, shooting birds and catching game.

It is important to know how to

drive a car, pilot a plane,

handle both motor- and sailing-boats,

to know something of

mechanics, radio, telephones

and even electronics.

It is equally important to know

something of topography,

to know how to locate one's position,

to calculate distances,

to make maps and plans,

to measure time, transmit messages,

use a compass and so on.

A knowledge of chemistry,

of colour-combinations,

the ability to make rubber stamps

and imitate other people's handwriting:

these and other skills are part of

the urban guerrilla's technical training.

If he is to survive

in the society he wants to destroy,

he must be able to forge documents.

When it comes to medical care,

the guerrilla must have skills equivalent

to those of doctors, nurses and pharmacists

in order to prescribe and use medicines

and perform surgery.

The most important element, however,

remains that of handling such weapons as

sub-machine guns

revolvers

automatics

mortars

bazookas

FAL guns

and other types of carbine

as well as a knowledge of the various kinds of

ammunition and explosives.

Dynamite is one instance.

It is also vital to know how to use

incendiary bombs

smoke bombs

Molotov cocktails

tear gas

mines

and grenades;

also to make and repair weapons

to destroy bridges

dislodge or destroy

railway lines and sleepers.

The urban guerrilla will complete his training

in a specially organised technical centre,

but only after being tested in action,

having actually fought the enemy.

Some guerrillas have weakened

and disappeared or resigned.
