BROOK EMERY

This lingering

It may just be the cruelest,
longest moment, this lingering
as death makes up its mind.

It will no doubt, and soon,
but the patient effort spent
attending is a test too many

in a life of testing moments.
Strength that let you carry on:
unwelcome now; your dearest wish:

to say goodbye and leave
without the fuss. Unhappily,
you’ve yet to agree the asking price.

Those who love you, though loving
to have you here, would grant your wish,
willingly hurl streamers from the wharf.

Sleep now. Your breath is shallow, sharp.
Your shoulders twitch spasmodically.
I hope you dream. I hope your dreams are clear.
